PRIDE

HUMILITY / MEEKNESS

Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you? (34) In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all the owed. (35) This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart.

Matthew 23:23 NIV Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You give a tenth of your spices-mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law-justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

What do Angels look like, and how do they act?

Hebrews 1:7 And of the angels he saith, who maketh his angels spirits,and his ministers a flame of fire.

God is in direct control of the angels. They are not always the same.
Sometimes they have wings, sometimes they are like fire. It is most likely that those who are termed angels are not confined to any specific form or shape, but assume various forms and appearances according to the nature of the work they are required to perform and the will of God.

God makes them:

  • sit down: Judges 6:11
    And there came an angel of the Lord and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah.
  • stand: Isaiah 6:2Above it stoodthe seraphims (Angelic creatures)
  • like women: Zechariah5:9 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and behold there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings, for they had wings like the wings of a stork…
  • like men : Genesis 18:2 And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and lo three men stood by him.
  • like spirits: Psalms 104:4 Who maketh his angels spirits
  • like fire: Psalms 104:4 His ministers a flaming fire

What do Angels do?

The definition of an Angel: Aggelos: messenger, to bring a message,
announce, proclaim.

Rev 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to show unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

In this verse it explains the beginning of the book of Revelations. God gave it to Christ, Christ gave it to his angel, the angel gave it to John, and John gave it to the churches.

Rev 17:1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither, I will show unto thee the judgement of the great whore that sitteth upon many water.

In this verse the angels are going to take John to show him what is going to
happen to Babylon.

(Whore is frequently used in the bible to describe someone someplace that is really depraved, really bad.)

Rev29:9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels, which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come
hither, I will show thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.

Once again the angel is a messenger, in this case talking about the pure and
holy Christian Church.


Are angels also protectors?

Psalms 91:11-12 (This section of Psalm is talking about the safety of those who trust in God)

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

  • Evil spirits may attempt to injure you, but they will not be able to.
  • Angels defend and preserve you. Evil cannot conquer them.
  • When necessary, they will turn your steps out of the way of danger.
  • They will suggest to your mind more prudent ideas, profitable designs, and religious purposes.

HOWEVER

  • You cannot reasonably expect protection if you aren’t walking in the way
    of obedience.
  • “Thy ways” are the paths for us, which God has provided through the Word. The “way” of sin is not “Thy way” and thus we will be out of fellowship with God and will no longer be guaranteed the angels protection.

Does each person have a guardian Angel?

Matthew 18:10 (Jesus is talking to the disciples about how a man should become like a little child, humble before God.) Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in Heaven.

It seems here that Jesus Christ himself is saying that every person has a guardian angel and that these angels always have access to God.

  • These guardian angels have immediate access to God to receive instructions as to how you are to be managed or taken care of.
  • Remember, this is if you are following God’s ways; If you are in fellowship with him. There is no mention of guardian angels for the ungodly.

What else can the Angels do?

The angels are also workers for God:

Matthew 13:41-42 The Son of man shall send forth his angels and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

They can also fight like soldiers:

Matthew 26:53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than 12 legions of angels?

(a legion is between 4000 and 6000, which means at least 72,000 angels.)

Revelation 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon: and the dragon fought and his angels.


How important are the Angels?

Angels are used in many ways in the bible; they work directly for the Lord. So they are in direct fellowship with God. This alone makes them extremely important beings.

Psalms 8:5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and has crowned him with glory and honor.

For now, as long as we are in our eartly bodies, here on earth, we are not as good or righteous as the angels. We still sin and go against the will of God. Angels, however, work directly for and with God, so they are “highr” than we are. However, notice that we are still crowned with glory and honor. Why else would Jesus have died on the cross for us?

Psalms 148:2 Praise ye him, all of his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.

The angels too must praise God. Even though they are heavenly beings, they are not as important or Holy as God Himself.

Hebrews 1:4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hat by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

It is widely believed that angels help the Lord God (Genesis 1:26 says: “Let us make man in our image”) and many believe that angels are actually in God’s council of the Most High. However, Jesus is more than important than angels.

Hebrews 1:6 And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith, and let all the angels of God worship him.

This verse proves that God says the Jesus is more important than the angels.


Do angels know everything?

Matthew 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.


How many angels are there?

Daniel 7:10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before Him. A thousand thousands ministered to Him; Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him.


Summary:

A most merciful, kind, loving, watchful God has provided angels to guard, defend, and provide for His children.

God chastens us for our own good!

Hebrews 12:5-15 (5) And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: (6) For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. (7) If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? [8] But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. [9] Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? [10] For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. (11) Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

  • (5) despise not thou the chastening
  • Do not hate it. God is working on you. He is training you. Correcting you. Much like a father will correct his children.

  • (6) For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth
  • He loves us like a parent loves their child. A parent disciplines a child not out of anger, but out of love. To properly mold it, to develop it.

  • (7) If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
  • If you love him and persevere, God will acknowledge that you are his sons and daughters. Heir to the throne of God.

  • (8) But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons
  • Fathers of bastard children, the children that the fathers do not support or acknowledge, do not care for their children. A bastard child is not taken care of the way that a child who is loved and cared for is taken care of. We are not bastards, we are God’s child. God loves us. He will chastise us.

  • (10) For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
  • Our parents chastened us, and we loved them. Shall we not also love God who chastened us for OUR good, so that someday we can be with Him and share his Holiness.

  • (11) Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous … nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness…
  • No chastening is fun while it is going on, but after it is over, if you have sought out God and His wisdom, if you have repented of your sins and chose Him over your Self, it will lead to the peaceable fruit of righteousness.

    PS 94:12 Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law;

    Blessed because the Lord loves them enough to chasten them, to save them from their own death causing SIN.

    Chastening can be convincingly painful!

    JOB 33:19 He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain:

    It is a parents responsibility to chasten their children
    PR 13:24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

    2SA 7:14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:

    DT 8:5 Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.

    Prov 3:11-12 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: (12) For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

    God gives us the perfect example. It is our goal to be more like him in every way. He corrects us by chastening, parents must correct their children by chastening.

    Those who will refuse chastening shall die!

    DT 21:18 If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: [19] Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; [20] And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. [21] And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

    Just as a rebellious son will be taken out and killed, God will allow us to die by our own sin.. our own choice.. if we choose to not harken to his chastening, if we rebel against God, if we choose the sinful pleasures of this world instead of God’s ways, we will die!

    When God Chastens, repent while there is still time!

    REV 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

    PR 19:18 Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

    Those who respond shall live!

    PS 118:18 The LORD hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death.

    Those who respond He shall not give over to death. Heaven is their reward.

    DA 10:12 Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words.

    Your true prayers of repentance will be heard from God. He will respond and you shall live.

    1CO 11:30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. [31] For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. (32) But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

    Never judge others, but always judge yourself. For if you judge yourself and are acting according to God’s will, God will not have any reason to judge you. But, if you are not judging yourself, you will be disciplined so that he can correct your sinful behavior to ensure that you will not be condemned with the rest of this sinful world.
    Rejoice, happy is the chastened person

    JOB 5:17 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:

    PS 94:12 Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law;

    Rejoice, be happy. You have a loving, forgiving Father who wants you in heaven with him. Praise Him for his marvelous forgiving compassion. You should be happy for you are truly blessed.

    The Nature and Unity of the Church in Scripture

    The term “church” (Greek: ekklesia) in Matthew 16:18, where Jesus declares, “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it,” carries the fundamental meaning of “a calling out” or “an assembly” (Strong, 1990, Ref #1577). This can refer to a general gathering, a religious congregation, the community of believers on earth, or even saints in heaven (Strong, 1990). C.I. Scofield notes that it implies a gathering of those “called forth or called out” (Scofield, 1967, note on Matthew 16:18). Spiros Zodhiates emphasizes that in this context, the church signifies the body of believers themselves (Zodhiates, 1992, entry for ekklesia). Adam Clarke defines it as an “assembly, congregation,” comprising individuals who share a “precious faith” (Clarke, n.d., p. 174), aligning with the Church of England’s 19th article defining it as “a congregation of faithful men, in the which the pure work of God is preached, and the sacraments duly administered, according to Christ’s ordinance” (cited in Clarke, n.d., p. 174). Jack Hayford interprets “the gates of hades/hell” as “the power of death,” which cannot hinder the advancement of God’s kingdom or triumph over His people (Hayford, 1991, note on Matthew 16:18).  

    The word “church” has roots in secular Greek, denoting an assembly of citizens, and in the Septuagint, referring to the congregation of Israel (Hayford, 1991). In the New Testament, its primary usage describes a gathering or company of Christians in several ways: the entire body of Christians, a local congregation meeting for worship and fellowship, or multiple churches within a region (Hayford, 1991). Related terms include “spiritual house,” “chosen race,” and “God’s people” (Hayford, 1991).

    Ephesians 5:23-27 further illustrates the relationship between Christ and the church, stating, “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.” This passage highlights Christ’s role as the head and savior of the church. Scofield (1967, note on Ephesians 5:25-27) outlines Christ’s three-fold labor of love for the church: His self-sacrifice for redemption, His ongoing sanctification, and His future presentation of the church as flawless. Clarke (n.d., p. 341) draws a parallel, suggesting that as Christ exercises authority to save and protect the church, husbands should similarly protect, comfort, and provide for their wives. Hayford (1991, note on Ephesians 5:25) emphasizes that husbands are called to lead with the same self-giving love Christ demonstrated for the church.

    Acts 20:28-31 provides instruction for church leaders: “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.” Strong’s Concordance defines “feed” (Greek: poimaino) as “to tend as a shepherd” or “to rule” (Strong, 1990, Ref #4165). Clarke (n.d., p. 288) explains that overseers are responsible for the spiritual well-being of the flock, guiding and providing for them. Hayford (1991, note on Acts 20:28) identifies several key lessons for church leadership in this passage: leaders must prioritize their own spiritual well-being, their position is divinely appointed, “overseers” (episkopos) implies one who protects the flock (linking to Luke 1:35’s “overshadow”), the church belongs to God through His purchase, and Paul warns against self-serving false leaders who seek personal gain and quick, superficial results (Hayford, 1991, notes on Acts 20:28-31).  

    The Church as the Body of Christ

    Ephesians 1:22-23 describes the church as the body of Christ: “And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.” Hayford (1991, note on Ephesians 1:23) underscores that this letter presents the church as Christ’s present, physical presence on earth, filled by the Holy Spirit to represent Him and minister His life. Matthew Henry (1994, p. 1664) comments that God has given all things to Christ, who is the head over all things for the sake of the church, entrusting Him with power to serve its needs. He further notes that the same power sustaining the world supports the church, Christ’s mystical body, which He undoubtedly loves and cares for (Henry, 1994, p. 1664). Henry also states that Christ “fills all in all,” supplying the needs of all members with His Spirit (Henry, 1994, p. 1664).

    Colossians 1:18 and 24 reiterate this concept: “(18) And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. (24) Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church.”  

    The Unity of the Body

    Ephesians 4:4-6 emphasizes the unity within the church: “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” Matthew Henry (1994, p. 1683) stresses the need for unity of heart within the one body of Christ, guided by the same Spirit, sharing one Lord (Christ), one gospel of faith, and one baptism as a profession of faith.  

    1 Corinthians 12:12-13 further illustrates this unity in diversity: “For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.”  

    Colossians 3:15 concludes with a call to peace within this unified body: “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.”
