How can I be a part of what God is doing in our Church?

Filed under: Old and New Testament — Adam Osborne @ 4:46 pm

A Bible Study by Adam Osborne, Jr. HOWEVER, I did NOT create this from scratch. This is an outline of a sermon that pastor Greg Wrigley, DD, preached at Orange Avenue Baptist Church in Green Cove Springs, FL.. Greg preached this “sometime” in early 1990’s…exact date unknown.

Have a vision of what God wants to do with the church?

  • Continued growth in numbers.
  • Continued spiritual growth for all members; teachers; counselors.
  • Continued building expansion to meet congregational growth.
  • On going training for all workers.
  • Meet the needs of the members and the community: singles classes, young adults, divorced members classes, counseling, financial counseling, etc.
  • Witnessing to the community.
  • Different ways of fulfilling “The Great Commission”.

God has a plan/purpose for the church.

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

  • This is a promise for members of Christ’s church to receive power to do his work. God will empower his workers. You don’t have to be able, just available…. and he will do the rest.
  • The people you witness to will also recieve POWER: people do not have the power to believe; the power of faith; God gives it to them. It is Him who puts his will in our hearts, not us. When we witness to others, we are opening the door. The person we are witnessing to must receive the message, ask him in, and he will give them knowledge, wisdom and understanding of Himself and his will.

EPH 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; (12) For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: (13) Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

  • God gave us pastors, teachers, evangelists. His plan was for them, as church body members, to help us learn and grow spiritually. They are to teach us how to pray, how to become more faithful.
  • God gave them to us to teach us how to become and then begin to act more like Jesus. That is God’s plan for His church.

God has a power for the church

Matt 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. (19) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (20) Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

  • God gave all power to Jesus. As Christians, Jesus lives within each and every one of us. As Christians, we are all a part of Jesus’ body, so we too have POWER because Jesus gives it to us to do his will.
  • Remember, we, the many Christians, make up God’s church.

God has provided for the church

    the angels

    • HEB 1:14 (speaking of angels) Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

    promises

    • MT 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Nothing will EVER take over God’s church. It can not happen, has not happened, and will NEVER happen. God has provided permanent protection for his church so we should be out doing his business, fearing nothing.

What is true for THE Church is true for our church. The purpose, plan and provisions apply to us.

RO 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. (29) For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers (30). And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. (31) What then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

    • God did it all for us.He called us, justified us, and glorified us through Jesus Christ! Who can be against God’s church and succeed? NO ONE.

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: (9) Not of works, lest any man should boast. (10) For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

    • We are God’s creation. He freely gave us our eternal salvation. We should use it to glorify him and do his works.
    • Our purpose for ourselves and this church, is to fulfill the great commission. To go out to the community, the world, and tell people about Jesus.
    • We tell people about Jesus by living and doing what Jesus commanded us to do.

Work together as the body of Christ
1 Corinth 12:27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.(28) And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

    • Working together as ONE, just as we are one with Jesus, we can achieve his will.
    • We are not individualists working without God or working without the Church. We cannot succeed on our own. God did not put us here just to help ourselves and no one else.

Luke 10:2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.

    • God’s church needs workers. Pray daily for the workers of the church. Also pray that God will provide more workers. Is there something you can do for the glory of God’s church?

1 Corinth 1:10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

    • Do you go out and bad-mouth other church members? Do you preach something else different that what the church teaches?
    • Do you bad-mouth other denominations?

God’s plan for his church is to be ONE, all the same.

1 Corinth 3:1-9 (NIV) Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly-mere infants in Christ. (2) I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. (3)You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere men? (5) What after all is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe – as the Lord has assigned to each his task. (6) I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. (7) So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. (8) The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. (9) For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field. God’s building.

1 Corinth 12:14-27 For the body is not one member, but many. (15) If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? (16) And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? (17) If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? (18) But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. (19) And if they were all one member, where were the body? (20) But now are they many members, yet but one body. (21) And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. (22) Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: (23) And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.(24) For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked. (25) That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. (26) And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. (27) Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

Authority of the Bible

Filed under: Bible Studies,Old and New Testament — Adam Osborne @ 10:39 pm

A Bible Study by Adam Osborne, Jr.

All scripture is inspired by God!

II Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Mankind doesn’t understand

Proverbs 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

The bible is the only way to know what is right or wrong. Man can try to think of how he should behave but he can not know the mind of God. He will try to understand how to get to heaven or how to live a good life, but unless he knows the teachings of the bible, he will not get it right.

How many times have you heard someone say, “Well, I believe this” or “I believe that?” Well, like the scripture says, your own thoughts will not lead to salvation and will lead to death. So many people today are risking their eternal salvation on their own thoughts, which won’t do them any good. They need to know God’s thoughts, that’s why GOD had the bible written through his divinely inspired writers.

Don’t add anything to God’s words!

Deuteronomy 18:20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.

Be careful what you say. Sunday school teachers, be careful what you teach. If you aren’t sure, confess that you don’t know and find out the truth.

Revelation 22:18-19 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

This applies to anyone?.teachers, preachers, bible students, etc..

Deuteronomy 4:2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish aught from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

Galatians 1:8-9 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

This scripture relates to false prophets, cults, etc. They may think that they are fooling people here on earth today, but judgment day is coming for them!

Proverbs 30:5-6 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. 6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

Everything that is in the bible is correct and pure. Not just some of it. We might think we find inconsistencies, but that is not the case. We don’t understand, we might think we know it all, but we don’t.

The Holy Spirit’s role in biblical teaching

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.

An Instruction Booklet for today’s world

II Peter 1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

Everything you wanted to know about living is in the bible. You need to know nothing else when it comes to life and godliness.

Matthew 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Jot = the smallest character in the Hebrew alphabet.

The bible is the ultimate authority concerning God, life, decisions, neighbors, love, and marriage. Anything and everything concerning life’s daily routines is outlines. The ultimate knowledge book.

James 3:13 KJV Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

NIV Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

James 3: 17 KJV But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peacable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

NIV But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

DECEPTIVE

Ephesians 4:25 NIV Therefore each of you must be put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body.

WILLFULL

Psalm 19:13 NIV Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of transgression.

SELFISH

Matthew 6:24 NIV No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

1 Corinthians 13:4-5 NIV Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. (5) It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

ANGRY

Matthew 5:21-26 NIV You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, “Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.” (22) But I tell you than anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother “Raca (an insult), is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, “You fool!” will be in danger of the fire of hell. (23) Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, (24) leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. (25) Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison (26) I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

Ephesians 4:26 NIV In your anger, do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.

Mark 7:22 (talking about the evil things that come out of a person’s heart) NIV greed, malice (evil speaking) , deceit, lewdness (sexually obscene), envy, slander, arrogance and folly.

UNGRATEFUL

Matthew 14:19 NIV And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.

1 Thes 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

UNMERCIFUL

Matthew 18:21-35 NIV (21) Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?” (22) Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy seven times. (23)Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. (24) As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him. (25) Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. (26) “The servant fell on his knees before him. Be patient with me, he begged, and I will pay back everything. (27) The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go. (28) But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denari. He grabbed him and began to choke him. Pay back what you owe me! he demanded. (29) His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, Be patient with me, and I will pay you back. (30) But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. (31) When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened. (32) Then the master called the servant in, You wicked servant, he said, I canceled all that debt of your because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you? (34) In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all the owed. (35) This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart.

Matthew 23:23 NIV Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You give a tenth of your spices-mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law-justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

UNCONCERN

Matthew 25:35 NIV For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.

1 Corinth 12:25-26 NIV so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for the other. (26) If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

INSENSITIVE/CALLOUSED

Romans 12:15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

INDIFFERENT

1 John 3:17 NIV If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?

Angels

Filed under: Bible Studies,Old and New Testament — Adam Osborne @ 10:27 pm

A Bible Study by Adam Osborne, Jr.

What do Angels look like, and how do they act?

Hebrews 1:7 And of the angels he saith, who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.

God is in direct control of the angels. They are not always the same.
Sometimes they have wings, sometimes they are like fire. It is most likely that those who are termed angels are not confined to any specific form or shape, but assume various forms and appearances according to the nature of the work they are required to perform and the will of God.

God makes them:

  • sit down: Judges 6:11
And there came an angel of the Lord and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah.
  • stand: Isaiah 6:2Above it stoodthe seraphims (Angelic creatures)
  • like women: Zechariah5:9 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and behold there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings, for they had wings like the wings of a stork…
  • like men : Genesis 18:2 And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and lo three men stood by him.
  • like spirits: Psalms 104:4 Who maketh his angels spirits
  • like fire: Psalms 104:4 His ministers a flaming fire

What do Angels do?

The definition of an Angel: Aggelos: messenger, to bring a message,
announce, proclaim.

Rev 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to show unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

In this verse it explains the beginning of the book of Revelations. God gave it to Christ, Christ gave it to his angel, the angel gave it to John, and John gave it to the churches.

Rev 17:1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither, I will show unto thee the judgement of the great whore that sitteth upon many water.

In this verse the angels are going to take John to show him what is going to
happen to Babylon.

(Whore is frequently used in the bible to describe someone someplace that is really depraved, really bad.)

Rev29:9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels, which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come
hither, I will show thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.

Once again the angel is a messenger, in this case talking about the pure and
holy Christian Church.

Are angels also protectors?

Psalms 91:11-12 (This section of Psalm is talking about the safety of those who trust in God)

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

  • Evil spirits may attempt to injure you, but they will not be able to.
  • Angels defend and preserve you. Evil cannot conquer them.
  • When necessary, they will turn your steps out of the way of danger.
  • They will suggest to your mind more prudent ideas, profitable designs, and religious purposes.

HOWEVER

  • You cannot reasonably expect protection if you aren’t walking in the way
    of obedience.
  • “Thy ways” are the paths for us, which God has provided through the Word. The “way” of sin is not “Thy way” and thus we will be out of fellowship with God and will no longer be guaranteed the angels protection.

Does each person have a guardian Angel?

Matthew 18:10 (Jesus is talking to the disciples about how a man should become like a little child, humble before God.) Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in Heaven.

It seems here that Jesus Christ himself is saying that every person has a guardian angel and that these angels always have access to God.

  • These guardian angels have immediate access to God to receive instructions as to how you are to be managed or taken care of.
  • Remember, this is if you are following God’s ways; If you are in fellowship with him. There is no mention of guardian angels for the ungodly.

What else can the Angels do?

The angels are also workers for God:

Matthew 13:41-42 The Son of man shall send forth his angels and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

They can also fight like soldiers:

Matthew 26:53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than 12 legions of angels?

(a legion is between 4000 and 6000, which means at least 72,000 angels.)

Revelation 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon: and the dragon fought and his angels.

How important are the Angels?

Angels are used in many ways in the bible; they work directly for the Lord. So they are in direct fellowship with God. This alone makes them extremely important beings.

Psalms 8:5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and has crowned him with glory and honor.

For now, as long as we are in our eartly bodies, here on earth, we are not as good or righteous as the angels. We still sin and go against the will of God. Angels, however, work directly for and with God, so they are “highr” than we are. However, notice that we are still crowned with glory and honor. Why else would Jesus have died on the cross for us?

Psalms 148:2 Praise ye him, all of his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.

The angels too must praise God. Even though they are heavenly beings, they are not as important or Holy as God Himself.

Hebrews 1:4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hat by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

It is widely believed that angels help the Lord God (Genesis 1:26 says: “Let us make man in our image”) and many believe that angels are actually in God’s council of the Most High. However, Jesus is more than important than angels.

Hebrews 1:6 And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith, and let all the angels of God worship him.

This verse proves that God says the Jesus is more important than the angels.

Do angels know everything?

Matthew 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

How many angels are there?

Daniel 7:10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before Him. A thousand thousands ministered to Him; Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him.

Summary:

A most merciful, kind, loving, watchful God has provided angels to guard, defend, and provide for His children.
