A Bible Study by Adam Osborne, Jr.

Dishonesty

  • Matthew 19:18 NIV (Jesus talking about obeying the commandments)…Which ones?, the man inquired. Jesus replied, “Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony.
  • Ephesians 4:28 NIV He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.

Disrespect

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:12 NIV Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish (to give friendly advice to) you.
  • Ephesians 5:33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Slothful (Lazy)

  • Proverbs 6:9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard (lazy person) ? When will you get up from your sleep?
  • Prov 13:4 NIV The sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.

Forgetful

  • Deut 8:18 NIV But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.
  • Psalms 103:2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
  • Psalms 119:93 NIV I will never forget your precepts (commands; orders), for by them you have preserved my life.
  • Hebrews 13:16 NIV And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Disorder

Broken oaths

  • Matthew 5:33-37 NIV (33) Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, “Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.” (34) But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne (35) or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. (36) And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black (37) Simply let your “yes” be “yes” and your “no”, “no”, anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

Adultery; fornication; homosexuality

  • Matthew 19:18 NIV (Jesus talking about obeying the commandments)…Which ones?, the man inquired. Jesus replied, “Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony.
  • Romans 1:24-27 NIV (24) Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another (25) They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served created things rather than the Creator – who is forever praised. Amen. (26) Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. (27) In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

Indulgent (no self restraint, self gratification)

  • Matthew 23:25 NIV Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.

Wasteful

  • John 6:12 When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.
  • Ephesians 5:16 NIV making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

Hypocritical

  • Matthew 23:27-28 NIV (27) Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. (28) In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
  • Matthew 15:7-8 NIV You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesized about you. (8) NIV These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

Unjust

  • Ps 11:7 NIV For the Lord is righteous, he loves justice; upright men will see his face.
  • Proverbs 28:5 NIV Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand if fully.
  • Luke 11:42 NIV Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kind of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.

Disobedience

  • Ephesians 5:6 NIV (talking about not obeying God)Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient.

Greed

  • Ephesians 5:5 NIV For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person – such a man is an idolater – has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
  • Matthew 6:24 NIV No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Deceit

  • Ephesians 4:14 NIV Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.
  • Ephesians 4:22 NIV You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires.
  • Revelation 21:27 NIV (speaking of heaven)Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Shameful

  • Zephaniah 3:5 AMPLIFIED The Lord in the midst of her is uncompromisingly righteous, He will not do iniquity (sin); every morning He brings His justice to light, He fails not; but the unjust person knows no shame.

Glutteny

  • Proverbs 23:21 NIV for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

Idleness

  • 1 Thes 5:14 NIV And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
  • II Thes 3:6-15 NIV In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. (7) For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, (8) nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. (9) We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to make ourselves a model for you to follow. (10) For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “If a man will not work, he shall not eat.” (11) We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. (12) Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat.” (13) And as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right. (14) If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special not of him. Do not associate with him, in order that he may feel ashamed. (15) Yet do not regard his as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.
