Age Brings……

An excerpt from Mature Living, September 2010 issue

Age Brings Rewards:

  • Exodus 20:12 12 Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
  • 1 Kings 3:14 14 And if you walk in my ways and obey my statutes and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.
  • Proverbs 16:31 Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life.
  • Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

Age Brings Wisdom & Happiness:

  • Deuteronomy 32:7 Remember the days of old; consider the generations long past. Ask your father and he will tell you, your elders, and they will explain to you.
  • Proverbs 3:13, 15-16 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, 15 She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. 16 Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
  • Proverbs 9:10-11 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. 11 For through me your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.
  • Joel 1:2-3 Hear this, you elders; listen, all who live in the land. Has anything like this ever happened in your days or in the days of your forefathers? 3 Tell it to your children, and let your children tell it to their children, and their children to the next generation.
  • Titus 2:2-5 2 Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. 3 Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. 4 Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

Age Brings No Fear of Death

  • Romans 8:38-39 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
  • 1 Corinthians 15:54-57 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
  • Revelation 21:3-4 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Age Brings God’s Abiding Presence, Strength, and Comfort

  • Isaiah 46:3-4 3 “Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all you who remain of the house of Israel, you whom I have upheld since you were conceived, and have carried since your birth. 4 Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.
  • 1 Peter 4:1-2 1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. 2 As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.
  • 1 Peter 4:19 So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

Age Brings Obligation:

  • Leviticus 19:32 Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the LORD.
  • Proverbs 23:22 Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.
  • 1 Timothy 5:1-2 1 Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.
  • 1 Timothy 5:8 If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
  • 1 Timothy 5:16 16 If any woman who is a believer has widows in her family, she should help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those widows who are really in need.
